Seamless Transfer of Production from Existing Tooling

When a specialist tier one supplier to the automotive industry was faced with an existing provider of rubber mouldings exiting the business they were confronted with the difficulty of finding a new source capable of accepting there existing a range of tooling. An added concern was that the customer had no stock of the existing parts.

The Tooling had originally been designed to fit dedicated moulding machines with a large bed size over 2 meters in length. It was believed that this would be a barrier to finding a new supplier within the automotive supply chain. In addition few drawings were available and the material specification unclear.

TRP were in the fortunate position in having a choice of modern moulding machines capable of producing parts up to 3.8 meters in length. TRP were able to send an engineer to view the tooling and deliver a plan to carry out the necessary modifications required to fit their presses.  Samples of the rubber were taken and analysed at TRP’s laboratory and matched with a suitable compound.

As soon as the tools arrived the engineering team were able to make changes using there in-house tool-room allowing tooling to be fitted and sampled within 48 hrs. In all the whole process, including accessing the tooling, agreeing costs, modifications and sampling took less than 5 days.

A spokesman for the customer said:  "The finished parts were of a higher quality than those from our previous supplier. The service we received has been exemplary - not only were there no production delays but as TRP operates 24hrs 7days/week our overall lead times have been reduced.”
