Materials technology is at the heart of TRP.   At or Hereford site we have a purpose-built technical centre include a laboratory, development mixing plant and test facilities. We offer a full range of services for the development, testing and analysis of elastomer based materials.

ANALYSIS OF POLYMER PROPERTIES
A product that has failed in an application can be analysed using a range of techniques used identify the reason for the failure. This will include careful examination of the failed part along with an investigation as to the way it was installed and used in service. These investigations can help determine whether the failure is due to chemical reaction, extremes of temperature, physical stress   or mechanical failure. TRP can offer solutions based on alternative polymers or revised designs.

• Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)

TGA analysis uses a polymer sample heated, through a range of temperatures. As the heating progresses, different components of the elastomer ‘burn off’ reducing the weight of the sample.

A pattern emerges which corresponds with the components of the formulation. This is a valuable tool in analysing existing materials.

• Thermo-mechanical Evaluation

Using environmental chambers to test the properties of materials at or above there operating temperature provides data which mimic the actual application.  The data can then used in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) modelling to create accurate simulations of component designs.

• Infra-red Spectroscopy (FTIR)

FTIR involves passing an infra-red light through or impacting on a sample of polymer. The light gives up some of its energy, causing molecular structures in the sample to distorte. The resultant light is then compared with a reference light stream and the result is represented as a characteristic plot of peaks.

ADVICE ON MATERIAL COMPATIBILITY
TRP has a wealth of experience selecting the best material for a given application.  We base this advice on our industry knowledge and will select on the best performance for the given application TRP will also advise on the material relative cost verses performance. This allows customers to choose the most cost effective solution to their problem. TRP can modify existing materials or design a material from scratch. There materials are then tested using our extensive range of equipment developed for polymers and components.

CHEMICAL COMPATIBILITY
Materials are often used in unique combinations of fluids, environments and over a wide variety of temperatures. Our test facilities allow chemical compatibility trials to be carried out to address specific customer needs. Changes in physical properties for various materials can be examined and used to determine the best rubber material for the working environment.
